  • Nepal Prime Minister resigns
    By Asiri on May 5th, 2009 | 4 Comments4 Comments Comments

Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal announced his resignation Monday after an attempt by his Government to sack the head of the Army was blocked by the President.

“I have resigned from the post of Prime Minister from today for the protection of democracy and peace,” Dahal said in a televised address to the nation.

Nepal Government fired General Rookmangud Katawal for refusing to integrate former Maoist rebel soldiers into the regular Army under the terms of a 2006 peace deal that ended a decade of civil war.

But President Ram Baran Yadav, a member of the main opposition party, has told the head of the Army, traditionally a bastion of Nepal’s elite and the former monarchy to stay put.

“The move by the President is an attack on this infant democracy and the peace process,” Dahal said, accusing the President of having taken an “unconstitutional and undemocratic decision.”

“The interim Constitution does not give any right to the President to act as a parallel power,” he said.

  • Cases of AH1N1 Flu at 787 Worldwide
By Asiri on May 5th, 2009 | No Comments Comments

SWITZERLAND: The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned on Sunday that the number of AH1N1 flu virus cases is still growing with 787 cases confirmed in 17 nations.

Mexico is still the most affected with 506 cases reported and 19 deaths, followed by the United States with 160 cases and one death (a 23-old-month baby of Mexican origin). Spain has reported 20 confirmed cases, Britain has 16 cases and Germany eight.

WHO also confirmed the virus has reached a swine herd in Alberta, Canada, which was likely infected by a farm worker who returned from Mexico.

WHO is not yet recommending travel restrictions or border closing, although it has advised people with flu symptoms to avoid travelling.

It also pointed out there is no risk of infection from eating pork meat. Meanwhile the scientific community is investigating the origin of the new virus with human and avian DNA strains and two types of swines (Euro-Asian and American), although those animals have shown no sign of being infected.

Experts are also trying to determine who was the first human that became infected, since there have been speculations over a Mexican child, but such hypothesis has been denied in the United States.

Marie-Paule Kieny, WHO director of the Initiative for Vaccine Researchn, said the virus detected in Mexico, United States and Europe is the same in 99 percent of its genome.

“We can say itA’s the same virus. We do not have any satisfactory explanation of why the symptoms are more serious in Mexico than in other countries,” she emphasized.

We are just waiting for the new researches and creation of a vaccine planned for four or six month while WHO recommended to increase health measures.

Wash your hands frequently, do not touch your eyes, mouth and nose and if sneezing cover your mouth and nose with disposable handkerchief are some of the measures.

  • Japanese PM urges resumption of North Korea talks
    By Asiri on May 5th, 2009 | 12 Comments12 Comments Comments

PRAGUE: Six-party talks on North Korea’s nuclear programme should start again as soon as possible, Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso said on Sunday.

Visiting the Czech Republic, which holds the European Union presidency, Aso said Japan was thankful for the EU’s unified approach towards North Korea’s nuclear programme.

“We decided the six-party talks are the most practical framework for solving the questions around North Korea and that the most important thing is to open these talks again as soon as possible,” he told a news conference after meeting outgoing Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek.

North Korea said on April 14 it would quit the six-party talks which group it with South Korea, Japan, Russia, the United States and China.

A North Korean rocket launch on April 5, seen by Washington as a disguised test for a long-range missile, drew condemnation from the U.N. Security Council. The Council demanded the enforcement of sanctions that were agreed against Pyongyang after it conducted a nuclear test in 2006. Last Wednesday, North Korea threatened a new nuclear test unless the Council apologised for imposing sanctions against it.

Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported on Monday that Aso had told U.S. President Barack Obama that Tokyo would not object if Washington opted to hold bilateral talks with Pyongyang, as long as this was part of an effort to re-start the six-way negotiations.

Japan has long been wary of bilateral talks between the United States and North Korea, fearing that its own concerns about Japanese citizens abducted by Pyongyang’s agents decades ago might be ignored.
